Cowboys performed an essential function within the stability of the western United States. They worked in raising livestock, repairing fences and taking care of horses. Originally, many cattle rides began in Texas and ended on the Kansas Railroad.

Driving cattle meant hard and hungry work. Cowboys may stand up early in the morning and "steer" the herd to the stop-worker the next night. A herd of nearly three thousand cattle means approximately 12 cowboys. In addition, there was also a track master, a camp cook, and a ranan man whose operation was to hold music for the late horses.
